The song works in 4 stages of dealing with all those emotions but ends with this feeling of being in this place. You could be reminiscing on what was, on something that could happen, or the possible worst paths or pasts all circulating at once. Being physically in a place but having your mind be elsewhere is something I think so many people deal with. It’s been on my mind so much, the whole track. Compartmentalizing has been a way to survive and no line in “91” affected more than that one did. We’re living in an insane moment in time. The line “My mother dances around like there ain’t no rip in the seams” absolutely gutted me. Of artists wanting to escape, artists dreaming of more, and of facing the darkness that comes from existence. TTSOOSN is an album drenched in themes that you find so often in music from New Jersey. I have seen a few reviews comparing it to Bruce Springsteen and I think that is unfair. I don’t want to be coy about this and tell you outright that this entire album is beautiful. Jack Antonoff is a goddamn master of the craft.

We are starting the series with Bleachers latest album Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night. This is going to be a series where the GateCrashers sit around in metaphorical bean bags as we sink into them and let it take us. Sharing our thoughts, feelings, and insights about music and lyrics. Since then I have always just wanted to have a listening party where we could have those discussions about music.
We just wanted different things from our art. What I wanted was to understand what it all meant, what they were trying to say with “All Apologies” amongst other tracks. They wanted to talk about how cool Kurt was or what happened to him. They didn’t want to discuss it how I wanted to discuss it. Some I fell out with long ago and others are no longer with us. I had a small group of middle school friends who I could talk about Nirvana with. I wanted to understand what it all meant. Every word, every chorus, and every piece of it was something I wanted to grasp. I remember those summer days of just sitting, listening, and trying to understand just what it all meant. When I was younger, I took my step-mother Megan’s copy of Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in NYC.
